Algarve Holiday Rentals: Your Self-Catering Questions Answered

Algarve Holiday Rentals: Your Self-Catering Questions Answered

Booking a self-catering apartment in the Algarve should feel simple. You choose a place near the water, you know exactly what is waiting for you, and someone local is on hand if anything comes up. In practice, most holidaymakers send us the same handful of questions before they book. So we have answered them all in one place – from what self-catering really means to what happens when you arrive in Tavira with your bags and your whole family in the car.

If your question is not here, just ask us. We live and work in the Eastern Algarve and we would rather answer it now than have you guess.

What does self-catering actually mean?

Self-catering means the apartment is yours for the length of your stay, with a fully equipped kitchen instead of a hotel dining room. You cook what you like, when you like, and you eat on your own terrace if the evening is warm.

In our Tavira apartments this usually means a kitchen with a hob, oven or microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and the everyday crockery, cutlery, glasses and pans you need to cook a real meal rather than just make toast. Most guests find they eat breakfast and the occasional lunch at home and still go out for dinner, which keeps a holiday relaxed without turning into a restaurant bill every night.

Self-catering is not the same as serviced living. There is no daily housekeeping and no room service. What you get instead is space, privacy and the freedom to live at your own pace.

Where should I stay in Tavira and the Eastern Algarve?

The honest answer is that it depends on how you want to spend your days.

Tavira itself is the heart of the region – a working town with a Roman bridge, tiled rooftops, a good market and restaurants that locals actually use. Staying in or close to the centre means you can walk to dinner, and the ferry to Tavira Island beach is a short stroll away.

If you want the beach at the end of the road, look at Cabanas, Conceição or the stretch around Manta Rota and Altura, where the sand is wide and the water is calm. These are quieter, family-friendly bases with a handful of cafés and a very short drive to town.

Further east, Cacela Velha and the villages toward Vila Real de Santo António suit guests who want space, golf nearby and easy access to Spain. A little inland, places like Santa Catarina and the hills around Tavira give you countryside, orchards and cooler evenings.

Tell us how you like to spend a day and we will point you to the right spot rather than the nearest available apartment.

What is included in the apartment?

Every one of our holiday rentals is set up so you can arrive and start your holiday immediately. As a standard, expect:

  • Bed linen and towels, with beds made up before you arrive
  • A fully equipped kitchen, including a fridge, hob and all the basics for cooking
  • Wi-Fi and, in most apartments, air conditioning for the summer months
  • A washing machine or easy access to laundry
  • A welcome pack with local essentials and a few notes on the area
  • A crib, high chair or extra bedding on request, arranged before you travel

If you need something specific – a quieter apartment, a ground-floor unit, an extra parking space, a later arrival – tell us when you book. It is far easier for us to sort out in advance than on the day.

How do check-in and key collection work?

We keep arrival simple and personal. When you book, we confirm your arrival time, and close to your stay we send clear directions, the exact address, a map pin and the name of the person who will meet you or where you will collect the keys.

If your flight lands late, that is not a problem. We arrange key collection so you are not left waiting at the door. Guests arriving after midnight should let us know in advance so we can plan it properly.

As a local agency**, Algarve Property Shops** also manage keyholding for many of the properties we rent. That means the person who answers the phone when you arrive is the same team that looks after the apartment – not an overseas call centre reading from a script.

Is self-catering a good choice for families?

For many families it is the easiest option. You have a kitchen for early breakfasts and picky eaters, a washing machine for beach towels and swimsuits, and separate rooms so children can sleep while adults stay up.

Self-catering also means you are not tied to meal times. You can head to the beach early, come back for a late lunch, and let the day run at the pace children actually set. Apartments with a terrace or a small garden are the ones families ask us for most, and they are worth booking early in July and August.

What about parking?

Parking varies by property, and we will always tell you exactly what to expect before you book – free on-street parking, a private space, or a paid car park nearby. In the centre of Tavira, spaces are limited in high season, so a private spot or a spot just outside the old town can make a real difference. If you are hiring a car for day trips to Faro, Spain or the hills, ask us and we will match you with an apartment where parking is not a daily headache.

How do we look after you from booking to departure?

Algarve Property Shops are a local estate agency in Tavira, and holiday rentals sit alongside our sales and property management work. That gives us a practical advantage: we know the apartments, we know the owners, and we are minutes away if something needs fixing.

From the moment you book, you deal with the same small team. We help you choose the right property, confirm the details, arrange keys and answer questions about the area – beaches, restaurants, boat trips, the best day for the market. During your stay, if the hot water plays up or you cannot work the air conditioning, you call us and we deal with it.

After you leave, we can also help with the practical side of owning in the Algarve. Many of our rental guests come back to buy, and many owners started as holidaymakers before they asked us to manage their property while they were away.

Ready to find your self-catering stay?

If you are looking for Algarve holiday rentals with self-catering freedom, in a place you can actually walk, swim and settle into, we would love to help you find the right apartment in Tavira or the Eastern Algarve. Send us your dates, the size of your party and the kind of holiday you have in mind. We will come back with honest options and clear answers – no pressure, no jargon, just a local team that wants your stay to go well.

And if you are weighing up a holiday let against buying your own place here, ask us about that too. We do both, and we are happy to talk it through. Talk with us : geral@algarvepropertyshops.com
